Found Q&A – Slugs

Hey Foundsters! As the opening of Found Fest get closer, we’re taking a closer look at some of the projects in our lineup and what they’re all about!

About Slugs: It’s about nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. We promise. A comedy/music/clown/basement puppet nightmare from the creators of international cult hits SOMETHING IN THE WATER and CREEPY BOYS.

Common Ground (CG): What are some of the inspirations behind the piece you’re bring to Found?

Slugs: Lucy McCormick, Adrienne Truscott, Shirley Gnome, Zach Dorn, Peaches, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, and the work of Caleigh Crow.

CG: What’s been the road leading up to Found for this work?

Slugs: Slugs began as a late night rant. The two of us had finished our run of our prior duo work Creepy Boys at the Edinburgh Fringe, and in our relief and joy of surviving the festival we unloaded all our frustrations from the prior 30 days.

As the hours past, we began joking about making a show about nothing. An absolute nothing of a show, no deeper meaning, just a place to really escape the world for an hour. What a terrible idea! We laughed, our lips stained from sangria.

But as the months went by, we kept talking about it. We both feel an intense desire to see shows that can make us feel free and the belief that all art is political and has a duty to reckon with the contemporary moment.

Since then, we have been working on bringing this monstrosity to life. We’ve written music with the amazingly funny Shirley Gnome (aka Ashley Slater), workshoped live-feed projection and puppets with Julie Taymor World Theater Fellow Zach Dorn, exploring comedy/clown/interaction with Deanna Fleysher and writing/devising with our dramaturg Caliegh Crow.

Slugs was made with the help of these collaborators and more, with many many hours of hot glue tiny bits of cardboard, dragging midi around a piano roll, and screaming in our basement.

CG: What should audiences expect from your piece?

Slugs: Fun! Stupidity! Energy! Feeling The Weight of You’re Own Bones! Puppets! Slugs is a technicolor, DIY, music laden, comedy nightmare. It is a show for everyone who feels burnt out from scrolling, exhausted by headlines, and suspects the best days are behind, but in a cute way? We are making a party, just for you.
