Call for Actor: The System by Althea Cunningham

This script workshop of The System by Althea Cunningham is supported by RISER Edmonton as part of the 2024 Development stream.

RISER is a project incubator produced by Common Ground Arts Society supporting 3-5 projects annually towards productions or development workshops with mentorship, producing support, and various in-kind resources. Since its inception in 2021, RISER Edmonton productions have gone on to tour nationwide and have been nominated for six Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards. 

ABOUT THE SHOW

Ritalin is about to age out of the foster care system, yet she habitually gets suspended from school for long periods of time. She loves learning, reading and literary arts and identifies with and communicates best through hip hop music and culture. She has an undiagnosed health condition that contributes to her being suspended, but when she meets Constance life takes a turn for the better and Constance has a secret.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The full ensemble will include five performers. At this time, we are seeking applications for the role of:

Constance (Black woman, 35-55 years old)

  • A youth worker
  • Shows care and compassion for Ritalin, the protagonist
  • Experience with music (particularly hip-hop and R&B) is an asset

DATES

Script Workshop April 22-26, daytime rehearsals (exact hours TBC)

LOCATION

Edmonton, Alberta
Rehearsals in Studio B at Fringe Theatre Arts Barns
Show Run at Backstage Theatre

CONTRACT

The artist will be paid a minimum of $800 for one week which will increase should grant funding permit. The artist will be required to sign and abide by the Common Ground Arts Society Safe(r) Spaces policy.
